My dog Zak, old but still sweet. He can’t walk very far anymore and it takes him a few tries to get up or down stairs, but he lives a comfortable life in the sun. The shot of him laying on the kitchen floor is what I saw when I first woke up this morning; Zak opened my door during the night!

This is Blondie, a local golden retriever. She’s the happiest dog in the world –– when she goes to dog parks, she goes to all the people there and greets them and looks for pettings. My latest charge is feeling a little shy…

This is my current “foster”, Cassie, who is actually the adult cat belonging to my friend Maya. Poor Cassie is recovering from surgery, and my place is a lot quieter than Maya’s! Also, fewer rambunctious dogs.

She likes this cupboard. I generally don’t let the kittens in there, but Cassie is okay. :)

Sorry for the lack of updates! No kittens at the shelter in a while, but with spring on its way, we can anticipate a wild kitten season ahead.

Meet my new baby! Her shelter name is Chandelle (which is French for “candle”) and we are probably going to call her Aveline (for the Assassin’s Creed character) while she is with us. She is 625g and is about eight weeks old.

She is all alone because she is recovering from an upper respiratory infection and cannot be with other cats! :( Poor baby… but she’s such a snugglebug. I’ve had her home for about an hour and she loves to be cuddled.

Least Likely to be Adopted

LaNola Stone’s concept was to make “fashionesque images” of the longest in residence at the dog pound near her home (some dogs had been there over six months). She specifically asked for the dogs that were the “least likely to be adopted” and took their portraits to represent them with personality, youth and “edge” in order to aid their adoption. All the dogs included in the series were adopted.

I would adopt all these babies.

You would be shocked at how fast animals get adopted if they have good pictures. My first litter hung around at the shelter for a week before I emailed them better pictures to replace their generic snapshots, then they all went. The same thing happened to my second litter.

The third? I made sure they had my pictures up on day one, and they went within a day.

A picture can be the difference between a shelter and a forever home.

Tonight is my last night with Cap and Winter! Tomorrow they go back to the Toronto Humane Society to be spayed and then put on the adoption roster. As kitten season is just about over and the place isn’t overflowing with babies, adopting these little catlings will be a bit more competitive :)

In that time they’ve come so far! When I took them home, they were only four weeks old, and they were sickly, weak little creatures who could barely walk. They crawled along on their bellies, were new to feeding themselves — there were SO many messy faces — and their eyes were infected and needed medication three times a day. They were barely 400 grams! The THS’ vet confided in me that she didn’t think they’d survive.

And now, look at them: five weeks later, they are healthy, rambunctious little creatures. They race about the room, they spend hours chasing laser pointers and feathers on wands, they scarf down food and scale furniture. Once upon a time they had trouble getting into the litter box, prompting me to trim down the sides, and now they bound effortlessly onto my bed, which is almost three feet tall. They are wonderful… and wonderfully naughty and mischievous!

I’m going to miss these little rascals.
